Arkansas River Valley winters are mild on average, and that average is precisely the problem. Because a typical January does not threaten plumbing, many local builders ran supply lines through vented crawl spaces and uninsulated exterior walls. For most of the winter, that is genuinely fine.
Then a polar air mass settles in and temperatures hold in the teens for two or three days. Every unprotected run in the region becomes vulnerable at the same time. That is also why every plumber in Pope County is booked solid during the exact week you need one.
Why the damage shows up late
Water expands about nine percent as it freezes. A sealed section of pipe has nowhere to put that volume, so it splits while still frozen solid. Nothing appears wrong because the ice plug holds everything in place. The break reveals itself during the thaw, which is why many Russellville homeowners discover a burst on the first warm day.
The three places pipes freeze here
- Vented crawl spaces. By a wide margin the most common. An open foundation vent in January makes the space under your floor as cold as your yard, leaving bare supply lines exposed.
- North-facing exterior walls. Particularly in homes built before insulation standards tightened.
- Standard hose bibs. Water sits in the bib and the short run behind it, freezes first, and splits the connection inside the wall.
The autumn checklist
- Disconnect and drain garden hoses. A connected hose traps water in the bib, which is what bursts.
- Insulate exposed supply runs in crawl spaces, garages, and unheated spaces. Professional pipe winterization and freeze protection seals vulnerable joints before the first sub-freezing night.
- Close or cover crawl space vents for the winter, where moisture conditions allow it.
- Replace standard hose bibs with frost-free sillcocks, which shut off inside the heated part of the house.
- Find your main shutoff valve and turn it. Do not just locate it β operate it. Untouched valves frequently seize, and discovering that at 2 AM with water pouring through a ceiling is much worse.
During an actual freeze warning
Let a faucet drip on at-risk runs and open sink cabinet doors on exterior walls so household heat reaches the plumbing. Keep your thermostat steady overnight rather than setting it back. If a property sits vacant, do not just close a valve β drain and blow out the system properly so no water remains.
If a fixture stops producing water during a cold snap: that pipe is frozen and may already be split. Never apply a torch or heat gun. Improper thawing is a leading cause of house fires and can burst a pipe that would have survived.
